He Causeth all..to Receive A Mark in Their Right Hand, Pt.1
...No man might buy or sell, save that he had the mark...Well, they're finally here -- credit card implants. It seems like technology knows no bounds. For years now, we've been implanting devices in animals to track their whereabouts using GPS and other radio wave technologies. We've also been implanting devices in humans to track and divulge medical histories. As far as your world-citizen ID, we've even started implementing biometrics; e-fingerprints, e-retina scans, e-voice recognition and even e-face recognition. The problem with the bio-techniques though, is the ultimate damage of identity theft. If someone steals your electronic finger prints or electronic retinae, it's much harder to simply scrap the old for a new re-issue. Stolen e-passports can now be purchased in bulk at discount rates on most any downtown street corner in Mexico City or any other city having a thriving black market. Conventional credit cards are far easier to compromise. The EU is already doing away with mag-stripe credit cards altogether.
So, from a practicality standpoint, we gravitate to what works and shun what doesn't. It would be much harder to steal an implant the size of a grain of rice and compromise a credit card, especially when no one knows you have one. They can be read from 30 feet away and never be noticed. Who'd-a-thunk-it? Well, until recently (except for some bi-millennial references), probably no one. Some members of the "Jette-set" such as the Baja Beach Club in-crowd in Amsterdam and Barcelona scarped it up immediately. Just like magic, they can pay the bar-tab on their credit-card with a wave of their hand. Impressive, n'est pas?
Think about it, with a wave of your hand you can open your garage door, unlock your car doors, turn on the headlights (if it's dark) and even start your engine. Impress your friends by paying your bar tab on your credit card at the night club with a simple gesture. Your family (and the government) will always know where to find you when they need to. You'll never need to go to a bank again with direct deposit cause all your moneys can be controlled by the little smart-chip implanted in your hand. The future is "just too much", isn't it?
