#1 2009 Resolution: Lower Debt, Pt.1 –
– You Can Do It: And Here's How...Many New Year's Resolutions become short-lived. But, in deeply troubled times, there tends to be more immediacy for commitment. Credit card debt losses have risen to record heights with paranoia as the co-pilot. So, it's not a big surprise that more Americans have targeted debt reduction (including credit card debt) in greater numbers, for needing resolve than any other single topic. With so large an audience, the need for sound and effective advice in meaningfully reducing credit card debt must be met, before the commitments subside (as many resolutions do). As time passes, some techniques lose effectiveness, while others become more important.
It's been found that most people can take a well-written set of guidelines, apply them and resolve many of their own problems this way. This has been found to be true with credit card debt. So, here is an updated outlook on the latest successful techniques:
Scope the layout: Start out by looking at the big picture. List each of your significant debts singly along with particulars for each. Include credit cards, mortgages, car loans, school loans, medical loans (large bills that demand on-going payments, personal loans, continuing membership fees, etc.) Particulars include things like interest rates, minimum payments, size of debt and flexibility.
Scope your budget: List all of your resources to produce cash inflows. Even include what you consider to be already spent. Viewing the over-all picture provides perspective when comparing inflows with credit card debt. Hopefully, your inflows will be greater than you minimum outflows. If they are not, it may time to consider additional methods to overturn this relationship. Search really hard...community yard sale on a larger scale, yard work, car pooling, tax preparation, etc. Of course, a part-time second job for the temporary until high interest on loans can be reduced, is ideal. But you must go into it with a ‘can do' attitude. There may be 100 little reasons to stall but, there are some very pressing reasons not to stall.
