Protect Yourself From Debit Card Scams, Pt.2
Pop-up Ads.POP UP ADS: When using your debit or credit card on the internet, be aware of pop-up ads that are potential scams. Typically you'll see these types of scams after you have purchased something on one of the e-commerce sites like Priceline or Orbitz. These scams offer cash back rewards and prizes just for clicking yes on the ad. Clicking yes automatically signs the consumer up for the advertiser's membership club. Unsuspecting consumers release their email address and at the same time authorize the hosting e-commerce site to release their debit or credit card information. The company then automatically debits or charges the consumer's credit card a monthly recurring membership fee. Conditions of the membership are outlined in small print which most consumers don't notice.
So how do you protect yourself from falling into the trap of a pop up ad scam? First, don't click yes on any ad, especially those that just pop up. Setting your browser to block all pop up ads could save you hundreds maybe even thousands of dollars worth of debit and credit card charges. Secondly, read the fine print for all debit and credit card purchases. Next, read the fine print of any membership club you sign up for. Some of these hidden membership fees can run as high as $39.95. Most importantly, check your bank statement thoroughly and often. Look for any transaction that would indicate an online business. Your bank will not be able to stop the recurring charge. You'll need to contact this business and demand they issue you a refund and stop the monthly charges.
A recent probe into the activities of these online companies has lead to a Senate Commerce Committee investigation. Records of one of the companies allegedly involved in this debit and credit card scam have been subpoenaed. At this time, it doesn't appear that the companies are breaking any laws.
