What Sm Businesses Should Know, Pt.2
Be patient in verifying all information.3. Obtain two telephone numbers when the credit card "bill to" is different than the "ship to" address. Verify the "ship to" address telephone number by checking websites like www.anywho.com which integrates telephone numbers, maps and email addresses to check for bogus addresses. Call the "ship to" telephone number to verify directions to the site. Keep in mind that when the credit card "bill to" address is different than the "ship to" address it could mean a sign of credit card fraud.
4. Be cautious of unusually large next day delivery orders. Credit card thieves love to order large quantities and ship next day before the bank or business has an opportunity to realize the card is stolen. Excessive shipping charges for next day are also of little concern to them since they have no intentions on paying the bill. International orders should also raise some red flags. Credit card thieves overseas has become a major concern. They are difficult to trace and impossible to prosecute. Experts advise against shipping any merchandise overseas where the "bill to" address differs from the "ship to" address.
5. Validate all credit card information prior to shipping. When individuals place orders on the phone, have them fax the front and back of the card. Additionally, ask them to fax the front and back of their state identification card or driver's license to assure that the customer is the authentic credit cardholder. Most importantly, don't back off!
6. Immediately notify the authorities if fraud occurs. Call the police to report the crime then call the credit card's issuing bank. The bank will be responsible for contacting the cardholder. Give the authorities and the bank all information including the "ship to" address to aide in tracking down the thieves. Report the crime to the city where the merchandise was shipped in hopes of recovering some of the stolen merchandise.
The best way to deter credit card fraud is to be alert. It is recommended that you familiarize yourself with the methods criminals use and stay on top of the latest fraud developments. Get connected to a safe organization such as the NFIB that provides services and information to protect your business.
