    Consumers are shopping more and more online these days while sellers have found a new avenue to market their treasures. Online shopping can be convenience, cost effective, easy to compare products, and can be done in the comfort of one's home or office. Basically, all one needs to shop online is a gift card, debit card or credit card which can make it risky and increase an individual's chances of becoming victim to fraud. It is clear that online buying and selling is here to stay which means that if consumers are going to be comfortable shopping, they must feel confident that their debit and credit card information is safe. Here are some tips on how you can reduce the risk of debit and credit card fraud when shopping online.

    When using your debit or credit card to make purchases online, check to ensure that the site is secure and trustworthy. You can do this by checking the sites address. In a secure payment site the address will begin If when you click on the purchase or payment button before entering your debit or credit card information, the address does not begin with "https" rather than just "http" you will want to stop. The site is not trustworthy. You should also look in the bottom right hand corner of the screen for a padlock icon that should be closed. If the lock does not appear or is open, the site is not trustworthy.

    Stay current on various online and email scams such as phishing. Thieves use phishing attacks to lure cardholders into giving up their debit and credit card information by sending emails impersonating lenders and other organization that appear to be legitimate.
