Abuse Credit, Get Divorced
File this under: "News That Should Shock No One."
Apparently, financial trouble can place strain on marriages. You probably knew that, but were you aware that January is a bad time of year for married couples, due to the stress of receiving post-holiday credit card bills? It's easy to want to give the best to your significant other or spouse – a flashy piece of jewelry, or a debonair trip to some faraway exotic locale – but the fallout may be real and toxic when the statement for your splurge arrives after the New Year.
Fighting over money is never good for a relationship, which is why you and your spouse need to sit down and discuss holiday spending before it happens. Make a plan you both and comfortable with, and don't deviate – it's crucial that you both are on the same page regarding your credit card usage and level of generosity. It's easy to let the spirit of romance take over when choosing a gift for your loved one, but the headaches that overspending will cause your relationship do no favors for anyone. Save money, and save your marriage – at least, be up front with one another.
