PG&E to Take Plastic
Pacific Gas & Electric, gas and electric provider for more than 15 million Californians, is now going to accept Visa credit and debit card payments for bills. By doing so, it becomes the largest utility company in the nation to accept Visa, of the nearly 3,500 which do. If customers seem interested enough in its pay-by-phone pilot program, PG&E plans to expand it to the internet in 2007.
In the 2006 fiscal year, Visa cardholders spent some $103 billion on household bills charged to their cards, which represents a 22.5% increase over last year.
