  • News:  American Express and Hockey

With the onset of new credit card rules, lenders are searching for more creative ways to increase earnings while protecting themselves from higher defaults. Many have formed new business relationships with major merchants and entertainment arenas to entice credit card customers to use their credit responsibility while earning special rewards and privileges. American Express, one of the nation's largest credit card companies, is offering a special fun event for hockey fans and particularly the New York Rangers hockey fan. The two organizations have partnered together in holding a fun filled weekend "Fan Fest" at the Madison Square Garden New York Rangers' Tarrytown training rink. The idea is not unique to the hockey industry, however, the method being used to determine who will is eligible to attend is.

Unlike the successful Chicago Blackhawks fan conventions held during the past two summers that was open to all regular seasoned fans, the Rangers "Fan Fest" is only open to those season ticket holders who purchase their passes with the American Express credit card. The special event will feature current and past Rangers players and coaches with youth skating clinics and more. The American Express credit card customers and their families will enjoy a summer barbecue and the opportunity to get the autographs and their photos with their favorite players. The event will host two three hour sessions on Saturday. The Rangers estimate that over 2000 individuals will be attending.

American Express has not forgotten about their humanistic and charitable responsibility. The major credit card company and the Rangers have also invited 50 children from the Garden of Dreams and their families to also participate in on the fun filled weekend event. The Garden of Dreams is a non-for-profit organization that works with Madison Square Garden "to make dreams come true for kids in crisis."  Whether or not the event contributes a great deal to the growth of American Express’s business remains to be seen; however, it is sure to produce a great deal of fun and excitement for many young hockey fans.
