  • News:  Boston Commuters Go Online?

Nowadays Americans use their debit and credit cards to make virtually every financial transaction. Companies who don't offer the electronic payment system have gotten a lot of slack. Included in that group are many of the nation's public transportation systems. Commuters have been complaining for several years about the lack of convenience in purchasing single fares and monthly ride tickets by debit or credit card. Several major cities are currently working on implementing debit and credit card payment systems. Chicago announced they should have the city's new system up and running no later than February, 2010. The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority System (MBTA) is the newest city to announce that customers can purchase travel tickets online. The system took longer than expected to implement but is said to be worth the wait.

Commuters can use their debit or credit card to purchase the CharlieCard, a reusable and rechargeable plastic card that stores value for single or multiple rides. Representatives from the MBTA say that commuters have been asking for the convenience for over three years and they are pleased to offer them this affordable and versatile convenience. Commuters can anonymously add funds to their CharlieCard and the system will verify debit and credit card information and credit their account before 5:00 a.m. the next day.

Commuters will also have the option of linking their CharlieCard to a debit or credit card account that will automatically deduct the monthly fare toward the end of the month. Furthermore, commuters can register their cards online for added protection from loss or theft. If the card is registered and becomes lost or stolen, commuters will receive a new card in the mail within three to five days with the existing balance loaded. If there will be more than one individual purchasing the CharlieCard, they system has the capabilities of registering multiple cards to one account. You can purchase your CharlieCard online at www.mbta.com.
