  • News:  Retail Supervisor Steals Customer CC Information

A former employee of Circuit City the electronics technology retailer that recently closed its doors was arrested for credit card fraud. The former supervisor is accused of stealing a customer's personal information for the purposes of purchasing off-road vehicle equipment. Derrin Lee Davis, of Sebring, Florida has been charged with grand theft of $300 or more but less than $5,000, fraudulent use of credit cards, and using or possessing the ID of another person without consent. The investigation was sparked when the card owner notified authorities of an unauthorized transaction through the web site Jack-it.com that specializes in lift kits for off-road vehicles. The card owner told Highland County Sheriff's deputies that she had inadvertently left a completed DSL contract on the checkout counter during a visit to the now defunct Circuit City. The contract contained personal credit card information. The illegal charges were made four days after the customer's visit.

Authorities were able to obtain a video surveillance tape which showed an employee pick up the contract and hand it to Davis, the supervisor on duty at the time. Davis put the contract in his binder and at the end of his shift walked out the store with the binder in hand. Sheriff's deputies then spoke with the Jack-it web site where the credit card was used who confirmed the purchase. The parts had not yet been shipped but were scheduled to be shipped to the home of the suspect's father. Jack-it immediately voided the credit card transaction which amounted to nearly $3,000. Shortly thereafter, Highland's County Sheriff's Deputy, Ronald Tookes, made the arrest. Davis was charged and released from jail on a $1,000 bond.

Systemax Inc., a leading multi-channel retailer of computers, electronics, and industrial products, purchased the Circuit City brand, trademark, website and other assets. They have recently launched the all-new CircuitCity.com website, which offers incomparable values on a huge inventory of brand name computer & electronic products at affordable prices. The new Circuit City offers online credit card payment, fast shipping and 24/7 customer service and is not affiliated with the now defunct retailer which employed the accused.
