Criminals who have been involved with a gift, debit, and credit card scam that has been circulating through several states have moved their location to Hawaii. The Hawaii authorities are warning banks and merchants of the scam. The criminal attempts to make a purchase with a counterfeit card. When the card is declined, the thief asks the clerk to call a bogus 800 number that is printed on the back of the card to clear the matter up. The criminal's partner answers the phone and gives authorization to allow the transaction. Police have warned merchants to be on the alert for any suspicious activity involving these cards and asking consumers to thoroughly check their credit card statement for any unauthorized transactions.
