News: CC Fraud; How Do They Do It?37
A woman who left her purse in her vehicle while shopping at the Berea, Kentucky Wal-Mart became the victim of credit card fraud and a car window. Alexis Hembree has been arrested and charged with forgery, fraudulent credit card use, and receiving stolen property after one of her neighbors identified her on a surveillance video making a purchase with the stolen credit card. According to the police, Hembree was a passenger in a vehicle driven by a male who pulled up next to the victim's vehicle, smashed the window, and grabbed the purse. The male was later identified on surveillance which led police to his apartment where they found Hembree. Hembree admitted to using the card and awaits her fate as her case goes before the grand jury.
Because of her sharp mind and quick response, a Zales Jewelry sales associate was responsible for the apprehension of two credit card thieves. The couple stole a woman's purse which contained her credit cards while she shopped at a local store. The thieves used the victim's cards to rack up over $11,000 in fraudulent transactions at Von Maur, The Finish Line, Game Stop, Mattress Hub, and Zales. The sales associate thought the two were acting suspicious; she called the card company who confirmed the card was stolen. She then called the police who immediately responded to the store and arrested the two thieves.
In Bismarck, North Dakota, Denise Painte fraudulently used the Twin Buttes Elementary School's credit card to purchase over $5,000 in prepaid gift cards from Staples. According to Bismarck police, Staples' loss prevention department began an investigation into the alleged theft after the store was notified by the school that there were unauthorized charges on its card. The spending was traced to Painte and she was arrested and charged with a Class C felony theft. South Central District's Judge Bruce Romanick issued orders prohibiting her from contacting Staples.
