In Atlanta a former bookkeeper was arrested for allegedly charging over $1 millions in personal expenditures on her employer's credit card and then authorizing payment by the company. Carolyn Lynn Cherry, who worked for a Dalton insurance company, used her employer's credit card to pay for expensive trips to Disney World, New York, Washington, D.C., Hawaii, and Myrtle Beach S.C. She then forged her supervisor's signature on company checks to pay the credit card bill. Cherry also used the card to make numerous purchases from the TV Shopping Network. In addition to the card fraud, Cherry wrote three company checks to herself totaling $11,300. She has been indicted on 24 counts of mail fraud and three counts of bank fraud for which she faces up to 20 to 30 years in prison and a fine of $250,000 to $1 million.
A prisoner at a California state prison headed a bank fraud operation while behind bars. Morocco Curry also known as Monica Dupree pleaded guilty to bank fraud and identity theft relating to credit card theft activities he conducted while in prison. After obtaining the credit card information on four victims, Curry made three-way phone calls to his partners living outside prison. His conspirators contacted the card companies and asked for replacement cards. Together, the thieves racked up over $139,000 in fraudulent charges. Prosecutors have credit the U.S. Postal Inspection Service for the apprehension of the thieves.
Lubbock, Texas Police have identified a man accused of raping and robbing an 87 year old woman. Police have identified Joshua Paul Stephenson from surveillance cameras using the victim's credit card. Officers had been searching for the rapist state wide. Police say the case was similar to circumstances surrounding a series of rapes tagged as the Twilight Rapist. Stephenson was arrested in Idalou, Texas and is being held on $75,000 bond. The authorities are waiting for the results of DNA testing to confirm that Stephenson was the assailant and if he is the Twilight Rapist. Meanwhile, he has been charged with card abuse.
