  • News:  Famed Model Cries Victim

Some people are wondering if one of Germany's famed model fabricated a credit card theft story just to get himself out of trouble with the Ghana authorities. Sima Ibrahim, a model and Chief Executive Officer of the Exopa Modeling Agency, remains in a Ghana jail while awaiting trial on cocaine trafficking. According to court documents, Ibrahim allegedly attempted to export cocaine to Germany in two tubers of yam. Now he claims that someone stole his credit card while being interrogated by the Narcotics Control Board (NACOB) at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA). Leading the investigation and a prosecution witness is Anthony Smith. Ibrahim alleges that Smith took his MasterCard and Visa credit cards from his wallet.

The accused said he received a phone call from his ex-wife who resides in Germany telling him that his credit card account had been compromised and fraudulent cash withdrawals had occurred by someone in Ghana. The state attorney, George Kwadwo Ofori testified that there is no such evidence to support Ibrahim's allegations that any credit card had been confiscated during the interrogation. Ibrahim has a poor track record and has been known to stretch the truth in the past. One incident surrounded his attempt to get a Ghana passport when he lied about his place of birth claiming to be a Ghana citizen and then denying ever doing so. He also retracted a story he told about being beaten and threatened by the police during his arrest.

The ploy didn't work, at least for the time being. Ghana's High Court Judge, Justice Charles Quist ordered that the police investigate the alleged credit card theft and allegations that his cards were taken during the interrogation. The matter is to be readdressed and results from the investigation will be examined during the next court date which will be August 12, 2010. Meanwhile, the model will remain in the Ghana jail.
