NEWS: Prettier Plastic
File this one under "really silly things to do with five bucks." Thanks to the entrepreneurs at creditcovers.com, you can gussy up your credit or debit cards with an array of colorful designs. Pop culture blog GeekSugar recently reported on the adornments, which look like sleeves, but are really reusable stickers fixed to the face of a card so that only the account number and cardholder's name is visible. Only the front of the card is covered, so the covers don't interfere at all with the magnetic strip on the back.
Credit Covers' site boasts that:"there are three things you probably never leave the house with: your cell, your ID, and your credit card. You don't let your mom choose your clothes, so why would you let your bank choose how your cards look? Why not have some cool, original art on your cards - a different CreditCover for every card!"
The covers have silly names like "Ohmygawd!" and "Mizz Sugar," designed by a variety of artists featured on the site. The site claims that the covers do not interfere with the cards' ability to be swiped through any kind of card reader, or even to be imprinted with old-fashioned press machines. Credit Covers touts a replacement policy for stickers that don't last as a guarantee of their durability. GeekSugar is just the latest blog to cover the decorations – obviously, they have an appeal to youthful cardholders who see the value in having some "bling" with their plastic.
Of course, the idea is pretty silly, and the covers definitely are never going to count as a necessary purchase – but it just goes to show that there's a buyer for everything!
