NEWS: LSU Players Suspended on ID Theft Charges
A shoe cobbler and his pregnant wife have been charged in Kuala Lumpur with possessing 37 fake credit cards and using them to buy up scores of Petronas Malaysian Grand Prix tickets for cheap resale. Leong Chee Hong and Jennifer Tai Kim Bee were accused of having the cards with the intent to use them fraudulently. Deputy Public Prosecutor Ahmad Fuad Osman informed the court Friday to take note of the fact that Leong had a case pending at a Malacca Sessions Court for possession of 10 fake credit cards in an unrelated charge that is the subject of an ongoing investigation. Ahmad told the court that it was clear that Leong had not "learned his lesson" from leniency on those charges, and that it was his opinion that the pair constituted a flight risk.
Nonetheless, the couple's lawyer S.K. Thong pleaded for a more sympathetic bail, and said that both accused had cooperated fully with the police. Thong pleaded the court not to impound Leong's passport, saying that he travelled to China often to get shoe stocks for the business he owns and operated. Sessions judge Rosenani Abd Rahman granted bail at RM30,000 each for Leong and Tai, and ordered the pair to surrender their passports to the court. Tai's father paid her bail this weekend.
The couple's home was searched Friday, turning up an additional 240 cloned credit cards, for which they are expected to face yet more charges.
