NEWS: Fraud Scammer Convicted, Sentenced
US Law Newswire picked up the
story that convicted fraudster and identity
thief Dwight Moss had been sentenced. Moss, who
was nabbed as part of a cooperative effort
between the Secret Service, the Federal Bureau
of Investigation, and the Bureau of Alcohol,
Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (as well as
local forces in southern Florida), was convicted
earlier this year of counts of credit card
fraud, three counts of aggravated identity
theft, and one count of being a felon in
possession of a firearm. United States District
Judge Ursula Ungaro-Benages sentenced Dwight
Moss to 222 months – over eighteen years - in
prison, followed up with a three year term of
supervised release probation. Moss was also
ordered to pay $255,445.61 in restitution to the
victims of his fraudulent activities, which
number over fifty.
Case records indicate that Moss was mostly
involved in fraudulently accessing his victims’
credit by means of credit card fraud. He not
only applied illicitly for accounts in others’
names, but also schemed to add himself as an
authorized user to victims’ existing credit card
accounts. Moss tended to favor retail store
cards, according to authorities – his
accumulation of plastic included cards from
numerous merchants, including Home Depot, Sears,
Dillard’s, Lowe’s, Sam’s Club, and JC Penney.
The SS, FBI, and ATF worked together to gather
evidence for the case, which included store
surveillance video footage of Moss making
fraudulent purchases on the ill-gotten cards,
receipts that corroborated the transactions, and
a ledger book that Moss allegedly kept,
marinating the personal details of many of his
victims.
Furthermore, a search of Moss’ place of
residence turned up a gun, ammunition, and a
bulletproof vest.
