NEWS: Prepaid Meter Cards in Norfolk
The City of Norfolk, Virginia
announced last week that it will be instituting
new prepaid cards for drivers who utilize
parking meters within the city.
Much like a debit card, Norfolk’s drivers will
swipe the so-called ParkCards throughout
Downtown and at the ODU Village sections of the
city. The city is touting the fact that drivers
can save money with the plastic by cashing in
unused meter time as a big advantage of the new
cashless system. Norfolk is but the newest of a
string of major US cities, including Miami, New
York City, and Philadelphia, to offer prepaid
debit parking meter cards. However, those
drivers attached to their quarters and dimes
need not fret. The new meters will still all
take coins. Money will still be the only option
at the city’s parking garages, too.
Drivers will have the opportunity to purchase a
preset denomination of parking minutes in
advance, and also have the chance to transfer
back the remaining time value back onto the same
card. The Meter ParkCards come in values of $10
or $20, can be programmed with amounts up to
$300, and are able to be purchased at the
Customer Service Center located at 222 E. Main
Street.
