NEWS: Colorado Aims to Crush ID Theft
The American state of Colorado ranks fifth in
the nation for incidence of identity theft. A
senator from that state –who doubtlessly has
heard account of the devastation of having ones
identity stolen- recently proposed a bill that
would take aim at the crime. The proposed
legislation would allow and require the Social
Security Administration to report to the
Department of Homeland Security all incidences
where a single social security number is being
used under more than one name, or when more than
one income is being reported under the same name
and address.
Sen. Wayne Allard points out that, right now,
there are no systems in place to catch such
obvious signs of identity theft, even though
such an "early warning system," as it were,
might stand to help millions of citizens avoid
the frustrations and costs associated with being
victimized by that crime. The bill would "tear
down the wall" of information sharing between
government agencies, stated Allard, who thinks
that it would only be "logical" to implement
such sharing when the prevention and tracking of
a serious crime is at stake.
Allard is attempting to pass the legislation
under the 9/11 Commission bill that is currently
going before the U.S. Senate.
